How to start using Google Analytics

1. You need a Google account. If you do not have an account go here :
http://www.google.com/analytics/sign_up.html

and take the "Sign up Now" option.
You will be able to use your existing email address as a user id, and specify a password.
You may have to confirm your account by receiving an email and clicking the link it provides
to prove you have access to the mail address.

2. Once you have your google account Go to http://google.com/analytics and login with your google account.
The overview page will be empty. So the first thing to do is
"Add Website Profile"

Select the Add a profile for a NEW domain and enter the domain name in the box in the lower part of the screen.
Select the Time zone and click the Finish button.

3. That takes you to the next page with the Tracking Code. this will be a small piece of Javascript
displayed in the window on lower half of the page. it will look something like this :

Select the code and copy this to the clipboard and save it in a file somewhere on your computer.

Click Finish on that page and it will take you back to the main overview page.

4. You now need to put that javascript code we created in step 3 on to your web page.
I understand you already have a website that you maintain So you I hope familar with uploading new versions of files to the site.
Lets keep it simple and just change the home page.
Yake a backup of the index.html page so that you can revert to it if you make a mistake.
What you need to do is edit the index.html page in a simple text editor like notepad, or an html editor.
Copy the code block (from step 3) immediately before the tag that is right at the end of the file.
Save that new copy of index.html and then upload it to your website.

5 Check your website is still working as before. You should not see any visible difference to the page.
If you have made a mistake compare the new copy of the index.html with the backup copy.
The only difference should be the 9 lines of code added . all the brackets and tags in the script should match up.

6. Now, when you go back to the http://google.com/analytics overview page you should see your website
has gone from a staus of yellow triangle, (Tracking not installed) to a green tick Receiving Data.
Google is now monitoring the visitors to your webpage.
On the first day or two you will not have much if any data to analyse, but after two to three weeks you should start to be able
to the use the graphs and tables to show you things like

1. How many visitors come to your site each day.

2. Where are pople coming to your web page from ? Is it via a search engine or via "referring sites" ( ie websites that have a link to you on their site)

3. What search terms are people coming to your site for

4. Which country do your visitors live in , How long do they spend on the site and how often do they come back , what browser are they using etc etc.

Now that you are starting to track the number of vistors, you will want to know how to atract more visitors.
The one and only thing that will keep visitors coming to your website is the CONTENT. So make sure you have lots and lots of content.
It does not matter how flash and impressive the web page looks if there is nothing there to read no one will come.
So focus on putting pages on the website with relevant material.

That means pages with text and photos. All the pages should be linked to one another.
You should also include links to other sites with similar subjects. Ideally they will link back to your site to increase your PAGE RANK.

All the photos should have an ALT tag, which describes what the photo or image is. I have found this very good at attracting search engines.
Seach engines cannot "see" a picture, so they need a tag to tell them what is in the photo written by you to be able to index it.

Lots of more good advice from this web site.

If you want to get people to come back to the site often then you need to update it often.

I hope this has given you a few ideas. Please let me know how you get on and if you can follow the instructions successfully.

Best regards
Jon Allen.
